Hotel Rio Piedra is a classic 3-star property just one block off the main square in the very heart of Cuenca’s historical center. This makes it an excellent choice among economical hotels for travelers who wish to soak up colonial Cuenca from a prime location without spending as much as those boutique luxury accommodations charge, just a few doors down. The hotel occupies a traditional building and offers comfortable carpeted rooms with wooden furniture; throw in some glimpses from its rooftop terrace toward the domes of the cathedral, and that would complete quite perfectly this image Rio Piedra projects primarily at budget couples or families and slightly older travelers: somebody who wants helpful service right on top of all major sights but has no interest whatsoever what trendsetting designers might have been up to lately.

Ups & Downs - Hotel Rio Pedra

  • The location is its absolute strongest asset; being just 100 meters from the New Cathedral and Parque Calderón puts you within walking distance of almost every major tourist site.
  • An American breakfast is included-mostly eggs, fruit (juice), and coffee-but this time all done with products of the region; quite a good extra value.
  • There is also a small rooftop terrace from where one can have an interesting view over the city's terracotta roofs. It makes for a pleasant place in which to while away some afternoon hours.
  • Large room. Very clean. Housekeeping seems to change towels and straighten up bed linen every day even though it's not necessary.
  • × Noise can be a real problem for all rooms facing the street because of morning traffic and activity in the city. Not much soundproofing anyway.
  • × Interior decor is, to say the least, old-fashioned. Wall-to-wall carpeting and older furniture with visible signs of wear and tear.
  • × There is no air conditioning in the rooms. In Cuenca's cool Andean climate, it is scarcely ever needed but the room can get stuffy on those rare warm afternoons.
